And even though in the end you knew they’d redeem themselves, prove to be a hero, etc., for me it always had this emptiness to it. Even though the audience knows that the character is a phony, the feeling of seeing the main character, someone you’ve come to like even knowing that he/she’s a fake, is heartbreaking. As a kid I always used to avoid watching cartoons w/ false heros, because I hated seeing the scene where they finally got exposed. Thought you could’ve added Mushu and Mulan to the list, but besides that this was a pretty good read. Despite his faults and ignorance, which actually make him one of my favorite Futurama characters, Zapp Brannigan is a false hero who continues being considered a hero by the people of Earth, despite being exposed as a fraud on several different occasions. Upon learning this information, his top priority is getting the radio repaired. In the film Into the Wild Green Yonder, he loses his half his ship and the entire crew in a chase, but does not give up until he learns that the XM radio is damaged. He received a great amount of fame and proudly presents the medal he “earned” for the victory. His battle plan consisted of sending waves of his own soldiers against them until the machines reached their kill total and shut down (the episode “Love’s Labours Lost In Space”).

He once achieved a military victory against an army of “killbots” based on the knowledge that those machines had a preset kill limit.

A FALSE HERO SERIES

Zapp Brannigan, from the series Futurama, is portrayed as Earth’s greatest hero, but in reality is an ignorant, pathetic coward. The best example I can think of is this guy: Some are forced to live with the fact that they are frauds, but there are some who somehow are still considered heroes. While Rango and the Warriors 3 proved in the end that they could become true heroes, there are false heroes whom do not reform and become true heroes. The Warriors 3 were eventually discovered by a young Thor and Loki, and convinced to join the quest to retrieve a magical sword and restore their reputations and truly become heroes. In reality, they simply traveled to a far away tavern and listened to the stories of other travelers and selected the best story and made it their own. They had their comrades believe that they had completed many adventures and slain countless demons and other evil creatures. The Warriors 3 were in a similar situation. Rango was humiliated and run out of town, but returned to set things right. He won the respect and trust of the town and was considered a hero, until Rattlesnake Jake revealed the truth. Rango made himself appear as a fearless gun-slinger who boasted about fake adventures and encounters. Some good examples would be Rango, and the Warriors 3 from the animated film Thor: Tales of Asgard. Among the false heroes, there are those whom eventually do transform into real heroes. The characters then must prove that they can still become true heroes. In most plots, these false heroes are eventually exposed and humiliated. The same can be said for false heroes those whom are portrayed as heroes, but have not earned the title or reputation. Heroes in animation can come in all shapes and sizes.
